1st Annual Physics Fair
You are invited to attend the 1st Annual Physics Fair on February 16, 2008. This will be an open house in which members of the public can come to learn about the research and teaching that are a part of our department. The Physics Fair will include laboratory tours, hands-on demonstrations, activities for kids and families, and informal conversations with scientists. We hope to have exhibits representing research groups in the department as well as displays on more general physics topics. Additionally, the Ingersoll Physics Museum will be open and the 25th Annual Wonders of Physics public presentations will take place.
Through the Wisconsin Idea, the University of Wisconsin makes outreach a unique focus of its academic mission. With this in mind, the Physics Department has started the Physics Fair as a way to enhance the public’s understanding of what people in physics actually do. This event will not only educate people about topics in physics, but also help to make them more informed citizens who comprehend the importance of current physics research. In addition to attending the event, we invite you, as alumni of the physics department, to contribute an exhibit to the Physics Fair based on your current or past physics interests. Exhibits can take the form of posters, demonstrations, hands-on activities, or some combination of all three. The Physics Fair is truly a department-wide collaboration, including undergrads, graduate students, faculty, scientists, and staff.
In addition to a planning committee with representatives from most research areas, we have the support of the department’s Museum and Outreach Committee and the undergraduate University Physical Society. We would like to add the physics alumni to this list of collaborators.
