Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need
(GAANN) Program

Application Information

This program provides fellowships through academic departments and programs to assist graduate students with excellent records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their course of study in a field designated an area of national need.

 The fellowships will cover full tuition; provide health insurance and a yearly stipend up to $30,000 pending a review of financial need. To be considered, candidates must demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Physics:

Eligibility: 

  • Applicants must be either a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident of the U.S.
  • Qualify for admission to the Ph.D. program in Physics at UW-Madison.
  • Fellows must be full-time graduate students and engaged in full-time coursework or research during each summer session. (Fellows may not engage in gainful employment other than part-time teaching and research appointments).
  • Recipients must fulfill a minimum of  1 year of supervised training in instruction for students and must participate in a one week TA training program as required
  • Applicants must possess excellent GPA and GRE scores.
  • Demonstrate financial need (complete Physics Department Confidential Information Form—information provided on this financial form determines amount of stipend/award).

How to Apply: 

  • Submit graduate application to University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School Admission site to submit your electronic application. Graduate Application Page
  • Submit GAANN financial disclosure form to the Physics Department (email, fax, or mail)
  • Finalists for awards will be notified by email by early March.

Timeline

  • Fellowship application deadline:  February 22, 2008 (for fall 2008 entrance).
  • February 8, 2008 invitation to candidates to supply financial need documentation.
  • Financial disclosure statements due to Physics department by February 22, 2008. Financial Disclosure Form (PDF).
  • Award letters sent by Physics department to candidates in early-mid March.

Student Enrollment Decision and Offer Acceptance Deadline:

  • Fall 2008 entrance: April 15, 2008.
