Opportunities For Giving
Welcome!
Welcome to the University of Wisconsin Physics
Department Giving Pages.
Whether you are an alumni, friend, employee or
student, we appreciate your interest in and loyalty
to the University of Wisconsin Physics Department
and we look forward to the opportunity to get to
know you better.
There is excellent news! The University’s
largest-ever fund drive, "Create the Future: The
Wisconsin Campaign" reached its goal of $1.5 billion
this past summer, a year ahead of schedule. A big
"thank you" to each of you who helped make that
happen!
At the departmental level, if you were an alumni who
received a phone call and donated to the Physics
Department during our 2005 UW Foundation
Phone-A-Thon for Physics this past summer, we extend
our personal thanks to you. Several hundred alumni
responded with wonderful generosity, both in direct
gifts or pledges. Your donations made a significant
addition to our Newton Fund and we are very excited
to have reconnected with you.
We also are pleased to tell you that while the
University has had great success with its own larger
internal (and external) campaign, Physics, as
promised, has continued to work on increasing our
own faculty member involvement in making donations.
We have been particularly successful in increasing
the rate of faculty donations to the Newton Fund
through payroll deductions. The success of this
effort indicates that our faculty wish to be active
participants in improving our own future. We also
have worked to stay connected to our alumni by
creating an Alumni Relations Office in Room 2334A
Chamberlin, by hosting an Alumni Symposium in August
2005, by overseeing a UW Foundation Phone-A-Thon in
Summer 2005, and by establishing a secure electronic
donation web site for each fund through the UW
Foundation. So, as you can see, through both your
continuing involvement and our firm commitment, we
are making excellent progress.
Two new funds also are now available for gifts. As
the Department prepared to move the
Ingersoll Museum to its
new quarters in renovated Chamberlin Hall this past
summer, it became more and more apparent that
updating of displays, plus some means of staffing,
would be needed to recognize the museum’s full
potential. To initiate fund raising on the museum’s
behalf, we created the Friends of the L. R.
Ingersoll Physics Museum Fund.
Meanwhile, things have been progressing. The
Museum’s doors are open daily and the expanded space
has been painted with beautiful bright colors.
It has several traditional hands-on displays for
visitors available – but to make real progress it
does need alumni and friends to support its
modernization. Do any of you have a special
interest in the museum, either with great ideas or
donations that would assist us?
In December, another new fund was added.
The Barschall Enterprise Fund,
in honor of former Professor Heinz Barschall, was
initiated by his former graduate student, alumnus
Jay Davis. While visiting the department last year,
Jay recognized the need for an unrestricted-use fund
which would provide the Chair the opportunity for
immediate flexibility in areas of need and
opportunity when recruiting. He decided that this
would be a great opportunity to honor his major
professor and the Barschall Enterprise Fund was
started.
As usual, our area of greatest need is still the
Physics Newton Fund.
Your gift through the UW Foundation to this fund
will continue to help us attract top faculty and
graduate students: host stimulating lectures,
symposia and other scholarly activities; sponsor
special events such as our Awards Night for
recognition of outstanding graduates, undergraduates
and alumni; support community-building events in and
out of the department and help us continue to enrich
the lives of our Physics family.
