Committee Assignments

Associate Chairs
Committees Reporting to Associate Chair
Review service, undergraduate and graduate course descriptions, update them as needed, and review the course offerings by semester to ensure the offerings meet the requirements.
Oversight of service courses, including laboratories and teaching assistants. Review TA performance report and recommend TAs for annual department and university awards. Includes oversight of course coordination and REACH effort.
Oversight of physics major courses, including laboratories. Develop strategies to make UG physics program more attractive, and recruit physics, AMEP and AP majors. Nominate students for annual department and university awards.
Oversight of MS in Physics with Quantum Computing speciality. Conduct admissions, advise MSQC students, monitor and improve MSQC program.
Committees Reporting to Associate Chair for Alumni Relations & Board of Visitors
Participate in engaging the alumni and work with the board of visitors.
Committees Reporting to Chair
Advise the department regarding graduate education and research related matters.
Committee to review applications to the graduate program and make recommendations on acceptances. The number of offers must be decided in consultation with the chair and associate chair. Committee duties extend additionally to proactive involvement in the recruitment process.
Committee responsible for conducting qualifying exam that includes assembling problems, grading, making recommendations on passing grade, and overall grades distribution, placement.
Serving on prelim committees of students and develop a concrete plan to “keep track” of students after the exam, providing additional monitoring of student’s progress towards PhD.
Promotes equitable climate and higher diversity in the department by reviewing and formulating policies and recommend action on any issues arising.
Reviews faculty annually to nominate them for intra and extra mural awards/fellowships and salary raises. - special assignment for this year is to ensure compliance of our department procedures with the "Revised Post-Tenure Policy" recently approved by the UW-System Board of Regents.
Reviews non-faculty staff annually to nominate them for intra and extra mural awards/fellowships and salary raises.
Organize outreach efforts, museum support and any departmental special events.
Review student award selection process and select students for annual intra and extra mural awards.
Work with new faculty search committees to recommend worthy candidates to the department, organize faculty promotions material and mentoring committees.
Review and update the department strategic plan.
Select speakers and organize weekly colloquia.
Review department finances and spending policies and priorities.
Monitor office and research space allocations. Evaluate remodeling requests. Recommend actions and policies related to the library, computing systems, electronics and mechanical shops development and usage.
Autonomous Committees
An "elected" council of faculty, which meets fortnightly to advice the chair on departmental affairs. (The proposed new members of this committee are put up for election at the first department meeting, and serve two year terms.)
An autonomous faculty committee to nominate next year's chair.
Represent the Physics Department in the Faculty Senate.
