SUMMARY:Algorithmic music composition - Philosophy\, methods\, implica
tions\, and possible applications\, Chaos & Complex Systems Seminar\,
Dave Smith\, UW Space Science and Engineering Center
DESCRIPTION:Most modern music composition methods are based on the mus
ic of previous successful artists\, like Mozart\, the sonification of
complex data sets and mathematical processes\, or by combining a larg
e number of manipulation methods and searching for interesting sounds.
...
\n
\nMy approach is drawn more from cognitive science - de
termining what types of coherence we can recognize\, and presenting th
ese as structure\, content and boundaries. One advantage of this app
roach is that the resultant music can be well defined in both cognitiv
e and aesthetic domains....
\n
\nIn the larger (non-musical) v
iew\, by looking at these methods as mechanisms for coping with chaoti
c and complex phenomena\, we end up with a rough map of consciousness
which brings surprising questions about our knowledge and educational
systems.... For example: How do "what we like" and "what we know" inte
ract?... How do classification systems compete with non-discrete pheno
mena?
\n
\nAnd some groovy music!
