SUMMARY:Membranes\, monodromy\, and the weak gravity conjecture\, Theo
ry Seminar (High Energy/Cosmology)\, Miguel Montero\, Universidad Auto
noma de Madrid
DESCRIPTION:Instantons coming from the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) o
ften
\nraise issues with large field inflationary models coming fr
om axions.
\nThese issues are famously absent for monodromic infla
tionary models\, in
\nwhich the axion rolls many times its fundame
ntal period. However\, a
\ndifferent version of the WGC\, the 3-fo
rm WGC\, predicts the existence of
\nmembranes which can mediate f
ast transitions along the axion potential.
\nI will discuss the va
lidity of the 3-form WGC\, how typical monodromy
\ninflation model
s are not threatened by membrane-mediated transitions\,
\nand some
other details of membrane physics.
