SUMMARY:High performance fusion plasmas and explosive instability\, Pl
asma Physics (Physics/ECE/NE 922) Seminar\, Steven Cowley\, Princeton
Plasma Physics Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:The highest fusion performance plasmas have been attained
by suppressing the turbulence that
\nplagues fusion experiments.
Unfortunately such plasmas frequently become unstable to explosive
\ninstabilities that can release large amounts of destructive energy
in a very short time. For this reason
\nthese regimes are not c
onsidered candidates for ITER operation. I will discuss how explosive
\nflux tube instabilities occur\, how they cause catastrophic he
at loss and how they disconnect from
\nthe confined plasma.
