Title IX Coordinator, Information and Resources
UW–Madison prohibits discrimination in employment and in all University programs and activities on a wide variety of bases, including prohibitions against sex discrimination and sexual harassment. These prohibitions are included in University policies and procedures, s. 36.12, Wisconsin Statutes, Titles VI & VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended. A summary of the laws and policies implemented by the University can be found online.
Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. Title IX requirements cover sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct and sexual violence. In accordance with these requirements, UW-Madison is responsible for taking immediate and effective steps to respond to sexual misconduct and violence. Sexual violence may include physical sexual acts performed against a person’s will or where a person is incapable of giving consent. A number of acts fall into the category of sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.
UW–Madison and community resources are available to address questions concerning sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, and sexual violence.

Allegations of discrimination made by students against other students, including sex discrimination and sexual harassment, should be directed to the Division of Student LIfe, who at their discretion may refer the matter to OED or handle it within the student judicial process. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights enforces Title IX, which forbids discrimination in access to federally assisted educational programs. Generally this covers students, employees, and visitors to the campus involved in University sponsored educational programs or activities.
