SUMMARY:Localization of quantum particles and classical waves in disor
dered media (Part I)\, Condensed Matter Theory Group Seminar\, Peter W
ölfle\, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:In the first lecture I introduce the notion of localizatio
n in a random medium. The phenomenon of weak localization is discussed
. In the regime of strong localization the concept of the metal-insula
tor Anderson transition is introduced. The statistics of the conductan
ce in 1d and quasi-1d systems is presented. Then the fundamental conce
pts of the theory of Anderson localization are presented: scaling theo
ry\, renormalization group theory\, symmetry classes\, fractal structu
 re of wave functions.
