SUMMARY:Thirty Meter Telescope Observatory: The next Generation ground
  based Optical/infra-Red Observatory"\, Astronomy Colloquium\, Warren
  Skidmore\, Thirty Meter Telecope Observatory
DESCRIPTION:After a construction status update\, I will describe how t
he telescope design was developed to support a broad range of observin
g capabilitities and how the observatory is being engineered. I'll dis
cuss some of the observational capabilities that the Thirty Meter Tele
scope will provide and some of the areas of study that will benefit fr
om the TMT's capabilities\, specifically synergistic areas with new an
d future proposed astronomical facilities. Finally I will describe the
avenues through which astronomers can have some input in the plannin
g of the project and potential NSF partnership\, prioritizing the deve
lopment of 2nd generation instruments and directing the scientific aim
 s for the observatory.
