21.2 The RC Circuit

Instructions:
Click on the "Start Simulation" button to open the applet window. Then click on the switch to charge the capacitor. You may change the position of the switch anytime by clicking on it. You may the source voltage by clicking on the green rectangle adjoining the battery symbol and dragging it up or down. Yellow balls are used to simulate the current (positive charge flow.) Colored bars are used to demonstrate the change in the voltage across the capacitor and across the resistor. The graph on top of the applet shows the time dependence of the voltage across the capacitor.

Navigation: You can come back to this window by pressing the "Close Simulation" button on the bottom frame of the utility.

Explanation:
This applet simulates the charge (when the switch is in the horizontal position) and discharge (when the switch is in the vertical position) of a capacitor in an RC circuit. The concepts are discussed in section 21.2. The graph obtained during the charge is the same as the one shown in Figure 21.4b.
