Abstract: Sizing Up Protoplanetary Disks
Although we are certain that planets can be formed, there are still large gaps in our understanding of how they formed. Observations show that exoplanets are found in a large variety of planetary systems, from multiple terrestial planets packed inside the central ~1 AU to several gas giants spread over tens of AU from the central star. The diverse outcomes of planet formation are intimately linked to the protoplanetary in which these planets have formed and grown. To better understand planet formation we should therefore study protoplanetary disks.

Hydrogen Mixing and the EDGES Anomaly

Abstract: In 2018 the EDGES collaboration announced a detection of 21 cm hyperfine absorption at redshifts between about 15 and 20. The signal may indicate that the hydrogen gas at cosmic dawn was significantly colder than predicted. I'll describe a new scenario that might solve the mystery: hydrogen oscillates into a mirror state over the course of the cosmic dark ages, leaving the remnant gas cooled and the anomaly imprinted. This proposal differs markedly from other BSM scenarios in both the relevant microphysics and the implications for model building and cosmology.

Astronomy Colloquium
Looking at the Universe through gravitational lenses

Abstract: Massive objects distort space-time, acting as gravitational lenses and distorting light bundles traveling to us from distant sources. Distinctive lensing signatures, including multiple or slightly stretched images of distant galaxies, are seen on the electromagnetic (EM) sky. Most of the matter in the Universe is dark; importantly, these lensing signatures allow us to map and weigh matter in massive objects, irrespective of whether it is luminous or dark. We start with an overview of the principles of lensing, some of the signatures seen on the EM sky on different scales in the Universe, and some of the conclusions that resulted.

One example that we will discuss is our investigation of the dark and luminous matter in a rare and extremely energetic collision between two giant clusters of galaxies, using lensing and other astrophysical data.

Theoretical work has shown that gravitational waves (GW) are also gravitationally lensed. We briefly describe the expected impact of lensing on the GW sky that will be seen with the future LISA space-based detector, and our current research on this topic.

Resolving spacetime singularities in flux compactifications and KKLT

Abstract: I explain how string theory resolves ubiquitous singularities in type IIB flux compactifications (and eventually KKLT de Sitter vacua) via effects that are non-perturbative in the \alpha' expansion of string theory. I will show that these can be understood in detail by mapping them to well known gauge instanton effects in pure 4d N=2 Yang-Mills theory. A perhaps surprising consequence is that the naively 'elementary' D7 brane of type IIB string theory is properly thought of as a bound state of two mutually non-local cosmic defects in six dimensions upon compactification on a curved 4-manifold. Finally, I will argue that the resolution described indicates that KKLT de Sitter vacua can be controlled by a small flux superpotential although the K\"ahler potential may in general receive large corrections which are difficult to compute.
