\nTitle: Quantu
m Computing with Individual Electrons
\nAbstract: Computers built
from bits that harness the properties of quantum physics have potentia
l to solve problems that regular computers cannot. In recent years\, p
rototype quantum computers have grown rapidly more capable thanks to p
rogress in physics and engineering. Still\, programming quantum comput
ers to solve real-world problems remains a distant goal that depends l
argely on engineering the right hardware. In this NOGS talk\, I explai
n how individual electron spins in semiconductors can be controlled an
d used as quantum bits to encode information. In broad strokes\, I sho
w how to prepare\, manipulate\, and read out these so-called spin qubi
ts. I also highlight active research fronts in the quest to scale sing
le qubits into functional quantum computers.
