Undergraduate Awards

The Fay Ajzenberg-Selove Award

This award is presented to undergraduate women majoring or planning to major in Physics, Astronomy, or Physics/Astronomy, to encourage them to continue their careers in science.  Dr. Ajzenberg-Selove (PhD., Physics, 1952) is currently a Professor Emerita at the University of Pennsylvania.  To apply, submit personal statement and nomination letter from faculty member. 

The Dr. Maritza Irene Stapanian Crabtree Award

This award was created in honor of the late Dr. Maritza Stapanian Crabtree (BS, Physics, 1971) to offer other talented young people a chance to follow their dreams.  Maritza worked as an undergraduate research assistant in the UW Space Physics lab when attending UW, and went on to be one of the first women admitted to the graduate program in planetary science at Cal Tech.  This scholarship is awarded to physics majors based on merit and need.  To apply, submit personal statement and statement of need. 

The Bernice Durand Undergraduate Research Scholarship

This award was established by Emerita Professor Bernice Durand, to promote meaningful undergraduate research and to support and encourage women and ethnic minorities as undergraduate majors in the Departments of Physics and Astronomy.  This award will typically be given after the completion of the three-semester introductory classical and modern physics sequence or equivalent.  This award is intended to provide approximately 1/3 of an academic year's tuition.  To apply, submit a personal statement identifying the Physics faculty member with whom you intend to work, and statement of need.

Ralph Henry Firminhac Undergraduate Physics Scholarship

This award was created by Marilyn Firminhac Whittaker, daughter of Ralph Henry Firminhac (BS, Physics 1941; MS, Physics 1942) in his memory.  This award is given to undergraduate US Citizens majoring in Physics or Physics Education (School of Education) with financial need as the primary consideration.  Priority will be given to applicants born in Wiscosnin.  The scholarship may be awarded for two or more years to the same student to assist that student to complete his or her degree.  To apply, submit a personal statement outlining your educational and research goals and statement of need.

The Henry and Eleanor Firminhac Physics Scholarship

This award was created by the late Ralph Firminhac (BS, Physics, 1941; MS, Physics, 1942) in honor of his parents, Henry and Eleanor Firminhac.   This award can be given to undergraduate or graduate majors in Physics.  Financial need is the primary consideration in the selection of recipients.  This award may be given for several consecutive years while enrolled, in good standing, toward a degree at UW--Madison.  To apply, submit a personal statement and statement of need. 

The Liebenberg Family Research Scholarship Fund in Physics

This award is presented to a sophmore or junior, majoring in Physics, AMEP, or Astronomy, based on merit, with preference given to a student interested in experimental condensed matter physics.  This scholarship may continue through the student's senior year, with support for research and travel.  To apply, submit personal statement, and nomination letter from faculty member.

The Elizabeth Hirschfelder Award

The purpose of the Elizabeth Hirschfelder (PhD., Chemistry, 1930) award is to assist women graduate students in Physics at UW--Madison either as a fellowship or as a research grant.  To apply, submit description of requested support.
