Text:

  • Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 4th edition, Vol. 2
    Douglas Giancoli
    Pearson - Addison Wesley

Vol. 1 of this textbook was used last semester in Physics 201.

Giancoli Vol. 2

Lectures: 8:50 am and 9:55 am Tuesday and Thursday in 2103 Chamberlin Hall.   The lecture topics and assigned reading are given in the syllabus.  You may attend either the 8:50 or 9:55 lecture.  You may be called upon to answer questions in lecture and/or to assist with demonstrations.

Honors Lectures: 8:50 Friday in 2103 Chamberlin Hall. These topical lectures are open to all, and are required if you have registered for honors. Attendance will be taken for honors students. See syllabus for lecture topics.

Homework: Done online through the Mastering Physics Website.

Exams: Three evening midterm exams and one final exam (location TBA).

Midterm Exam #1: Monday, Feb 18, 5:30 - 7 pm
Midterm Exam #2: Thursday, Mar 13, 5:30 - 7 pm
Midterm Exam #3: Monday, Apr 14, 5:30 - 7 pm
Final Exam: Monday, May 12, 5:05 - 7:05 pm

If you have an academic scheduling conflict with any of the exam times, please inform both Professor Everett and your TA by email at least 2 weeks before the exam in question, so that we can accommodate you.

Discussion Sections: Discussion sections are held two times per week. They are most useful for help on HW, lecture topics, and exam preparation. Discussion sections start Thurs, Jan. 24.

Laboratories: Laboratories are three hours long, once per week. Labs start the week of Jan. 28, and there are ten labs this semester.  Labs are mandatory; each missed lab will automatically lower your final grade by half a letter point.

Missed labs can only be made up with an approved excuse (it needs to be a good one!), and your TA's approval.  Pending approval, makeup labs will be scheduled during the three midterm exam weeks (see the syllabus).  Please see the laboratory link at left for further details.

Grading:
Homework 100 pts
Laboratory 50 pts
Discussion 50 pts
Midterm Exam 1 100 pts
Midterm Exam 2 100 pts
Midterm Exam 3 100 pts
Final Exam 200 pts

The course will be graded on a curve, based on the above point totals.
