Due to the real threat of ransomware and other attacks, it is important to manage computers used in your work at UW in a way that reduces the risk to both you and the organization. It is not only a good idea but also a mandate from funding agencies and the UW itself.
UW-Owned Computers
The simplest way to install the recommended security tools is to follow the steps below for your OS.
- MacOS
- Windows – contact us for the department Windows installer image
- Linux – contact us for packages or have us manage the computer with puppet
If the above options would be problematic, an alternative will be needed to meet the security requirements. See UW-Madison – IT – Endpoint Management and Security Policy Standards for the general principles.
Personally Owned Computers
Personally owned computers used in your work at UW should at least meet a basic set of security standards. The most important things are:
- Enable the security features of the operating system (e.g. firewall, Windows Defender). See Antivirus software for personally owned devices.
- Apply updates regularly.
- Regularly back up important files. Doing it by hand is risky. Use backup software.
- Avoid storing sensitive information on the computer. If that is not possible, let’s have a discussion about ways to reduce risk.
See UW-Madison – IT – Endpoint Management and Security Policy Standards for more details.
