Handling Sensitive Data

If you handle data containing student records, social security numbers, or any such sensitive information, it is important to reduce the risk of accidental exposure. See the University’s guidelines, Handling Sensitive University Data.

The Physics Department provides various services for data storage. Some of these are not suitable for storage of sensitive data. These include the following:

Other areas not listed above may also be unsuitable. If you have need to store such data, please talk to us to come up with a plan for doing so safely.

If you have existing files that you would like scanned to determine if they contain social security numbers or other similar identifiers, we can do that for you or provide you with software for doing it.
