UW-Physics Computer Management and Security Support

Due to the real threat of ransomware and other attacks, it is important to manage computers used in your work at UW in a way that reduces the risk to both you and the organization. It is not only a good idea but increasingly a mandate from funding agencies and the UW itself.

UW-Owned Computers

It is highly recommended that UW-owned computers run our configuration management software that installs the UW-supplied security tools. See instructions below for the supported operating systems:

  • MacOS
  • Windows – contact us for installers
  • Linux – contact us for installers

If it would be problematic to run our configuration management software, an alternative will be needed to meet the security requirements. See UW-Madison – IT – Endpoint Management and Security Policy Standards for the general principles.

Personally Owned Computers

Personally owned computers used in your work at UW should at least meet a basic set of security standards. The most important things are:

  • Enable the security features of the operating system (e.g. firewall, Windows Defender). See Antivirus software for personally owned devices.
  • Apply updates regularly.
  • Regularly back up important files. Doing it by hand is risky. Use backup software.
  • Avoid storing sensitive information on the computer. If that is not possible, let’s have a discussion about ways to reduce risk.

See UW-Madison – IT – Endpoint Management and Security Policy Standards for more details.
