Connecting
Off-campus: you must first connect to WiscVPN. Instructions here Once you have connected by WiscVPN or are connecting from on-campus follow these instructions:
On-campus / Connected to WiscVPN:
Using Finder select “Go->Connect to Server…”
In the “server address” box enter : smb://smb.physics.wisc.edu/smb
Then “Connect”
Next enter your Physics username in the “Name:” field and Physics password in the “Password:” field. (Note: CaSE ImPORTant for both password and username.)
Optional: Checking “Remember this password in my keychain” will cause OS X to store your username and password so that you do not need to re-enter them every time you log in to your computer. If you can access sensitive files with your account, leaving this unchecked will provide extra security. E.g preventing others from accessing these files from a stolen laptop.
Note: Some speed improvement can be had by entering this command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores -bool TRUE
Note: Please ignore message “The document ?file name? is on a volume that does not support permanent version storage”. The local filesystem stores old versions of the file, but SMB cannot at the moment.
Disconnecting
Disconnecting is a security measure to prevent access to your SMB files from a computer you have previously used to access SMB.
“Eject” smb.physics.wisc.edu using Finder.
Then run Terminal and execute:
kdestroy
