Simulating Radio Strong Gravitational Lenses for the Dark Matter Substructure Inference Problem

Abstract: In the next 10 years, there will be more sky data than ever with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, Euclid Space Telescope, Roman Space Telescope, and SKA Observatory. With these telescopes, hundreds of thousands of strong gravitational lenses are expected to be identified changing the landscape of dark matter research. Follow-up observations using high resolution VLBI will unveil the delicate features in these radio strong lenses allowing for the opportunity to probe low mass perturbers such as line-of-sight dark matter halos. Only two systems with VLBI data have been studied to date resulting in the first million solar mass object detected at cosmological distances. Using gravitational lensing simulations, we present a forecast on how many of these radio strong gravitational lenses exist and are useful for dark matter substructure constraints.
